Earlier this month, Eri & I made the trip down to Santa Monica High School to attend YALLWEST, which is a Young Adult Book Festival!! For both of us, it was our second year attending the festival. Somehow it gets better and better each year.
We took all the photobooth pictures, broke our backs carrying books, and got to meet a couple very special people.
T’was 3am. I was wide awake, getting out my portable charger, sun screen that wouldn’t be used, books to get signed, and my impulse to go to all the photobooths.
By the time I got through the traffic filled 405, it was 6am when I picked up Eri for our day at YALLWEST. Did I need to force her to get up that early? No. But, if you know me, you know I always have to be 12 hours early. We were the first ones in the Press Pass line 😎.
→YALLWEST pro tip: if you’re a member of the media, i recommend applying for a press pass. it gives you author interviewing privileges & we were in a totally separate line from the one a mile long for everyone else. also, we were let in exactly at 9am which meant we were the first ones in into the festival!
Eri & I made our dash to get Brightly Burning Totes and then get into line for Underlined Prom Tickets, which promised Ice cream and ARCs.
While waiting in line, we also both spotted Sadie (one of the cool interactive giveaways at YALLWEST) & got Sadie ARCs. After that, Eri & I split off to wander the festival.
I ended up in line for Chemistry Lessons from HMH Teen. The book had a STEM Heroine and came with branded pencils. Words cannot express how much I love the people at HMH teen. They are truly the highlight of the festival. Tara even remembered me from last year when I got the only ARC of Meet Cute (see the video of me on their Twitter here).
Eri & I reuinted for the DC Comics: Storytellers Panel (both of us are DC fans 💅). The panel was comprised of the authors doing the upcoming DC Zoom & Ink titles (aka the YA and MG adaptations of DC characters) including people like Kami Garcia and Danielle Paige. Personally, I was dying to see Gwenda Bond. She’s the author of the ongoing YA Lois Lane series. I never thought I would get to meet her *cries*.
I livestreamed the panel, which you can watch below through my Twitter account!! Excuse my poor cameraman skills at the beginning, uhh, technology and I don’t always get along.
Then, it was time for Prom!!!! Well, Underlined Book Nerd Prom. Beyond knowing that there was going to be ice cream & ARCs, we didn’t know what to expect. I definitely was not expecting to get Ice Cream sandwiches that were inspired by books (we got the Obsidio inspired one), an ARC of Odd One Out, and see author Nic Stone in the flesh. It was a lot of fun. Plus, they were take prom photos with the classic school year book photo background which was hilarious.
After that, Eri & I made out trek to the Epic Reads x Dormify event. In a big surprise of the day, we both ended up getting ARCs of What If It’s US!! It was based off of Epic Reads’ new Trivia Cards that asked questions like “what’s the last series you binged”. I accounted us both getting our number drawn due to the fact that we were #17 & #19 aka my lucky numbers. It was fate.
Once again, Eri & I split off for signings. I went to see Gwenda Bond, earlier mentioned as the author of the YA Lois Lane series. She was perfect & amazing. I’m delighted that I got express my love for her take on Lois in person.
The day was coming to a close. Eri and stayed in the NOVL booth area where we got the NOVL Water Bottles, which I have had my eye on for ages. Of course, I also forced Eri to take pictures with me at the NOVL photobooth.
That was a wrap on our day!!!
Surprise surprise I woke up at 5:30 am entirely of my own free will, a rare event that could be attributed to the jet lag of flying in from the midwest the night before.
We grabbed starbucks and ended up at the front of the press line, mostly because there was no line when we arrived, hence I did an impromptu unboxing of a book I’d ordered and couldn’t remember. It turned out to be Furyborn, which was shocking considering it arrived three weeks early.
After Alexis and I made a mad dash to grab some things (see Alexis’ recap for details), I stopped by the Fierce Reads booth to grab a croissant and juice, as well as a lovely Wednesday Books tote bag, which had a surprise ARC inside.
I ended up seeing someone holding one of the Rick Riordan presents ARCs, the Mayan book I believe, and made my way over to the extremely long line to see if I could get one myself. After a few runs through the line, the booth person took pity on me and gave me the Dragon Pearl ARC, which I am so excited to read. Then I made my way over to the DC panel, especially since one of my favorite comics writers Margeurite Bennett would be there (the writer behind the popular DC Bombshells comics which I highly highly recommend!)
Unfortunately I had to skip out early to get in line for the HMH macaron hour, which was where they gave out Grim Lovely, which I forgot to take photos of lmao, but then Alexis and I dashed over to the Royals photobooth where we posed with our glasses of sparkling cider *clink clink*
We then went over to the Underlined prom, but Alexis recapped that better so I’ll skip over that for now. Next, we split off to get in some signing lines and meet some authors. I finally met the lovely Gloria Chao, who I’d had the pleasure of chatting with on Twitter before. I also met Sandhya Menon again, who is one of the kindest authors to meet in person and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to do so!
I did get to meet Marguerite Bennett in person and get some of my DC Bombshells United issues signed (although I was super silly and forgot half of my issues at home lol) and also last but not least I got to meet up with my friend June, who was in LA for YALLWEST. I pretty much just yelled at her about The Poppy War (if you’re reading this, add it to your TBR right now) and The Wicked King, but yeah that was awesome haha.
All in all, I adored YALLWEST, although there were some goodies I missed out on and also got to hang out with Alexis for what, almost 12 whole hours in person. Not to be a sappy person, but I’ve missed her so much while I was in school and this was the best way to catch up.
And, of course, the part you’ve all been waiting for: the giveaway. We, by coincidence, ended up getting some of the same ARCs & figured we’d give them away because we basically share our books and didn’t need more than one copy.
