A Diverse Book I Have Read & Enjoyed

29904219.jpgTitle: Not Your Sidekick (Not Your Sidekick #1)
Author: C.B. Lee
Publication Date: September 8th 2016
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction, LGBT
Pages: 283

Why I love it: Not Your Sidekick is a super fun book.  There’s superheroes, canon F/F, lots of fluff, and a Chinese/Vietnamese heroine.

Synopsis:

Welcome to Andover… where superpowers are common, but internships are complicated. Just ask high school nobody, Jessica Tran. Despite her heroic lineage, Jess is resigned to a life without superpowers and is merely looking to beef-up her college applications when she stumbles upon the perfect (paid!) internship—only it turns out to be for the town’s most heinous supervillain. On the upside, she gets to work with her longtime secret crush, Abby, who Jess thinks may have a secret of her own. Then there’s the budding attraction to her fellow intern, the mysterious “M,” who never seems to be in the same place as Abby. But what starts as a fun way to spite her superhero parents takes a sudden and dangerous turn when she uncovers a plot larger than heroes and villains altogether.

A Released Diverse Book that I Haven’t Read Yet

30269126.jpgTitle: Empress of a Thousand Skies (Empress of a Thousand Skies #1)
Author: Rhoda Belleza
Publication Date: February 7th 2017
Genre: Young Adult, Science Fiction
Pages: 314

Why I Want to Read It: Diverse Science Fiction!!! I’m usually not one for revenge arcs, but the heroine has been compared to Arya Stark (one of my favorite characters of all time) so that drew me in.

Synopsis:

CROWN PRINCESS RHIANNON TA’AN WANTS VENGEANCE.

The only surviving heir to an ancient Kalusian dynasty, RHEE has spent her life training to destroy the people who killed her family. Now, on the eve of her coronation, the time has finally come for Rhee to claim her throne – and her revenge.

ALYOSHA is a Wraetan who has risen above his war refugee origins to find fame as the dashing star of a DroneVision show. Despite his popularity, Aly struggles with anti-Wraetan prejudices and the pressure of being perfect in the public eye.

Their paths collide with one brutal act of violence: Rhee is attacked, barely escaping with her life. Aly is blamed for her presumed murder.

The princess and her accused killer are forced to go into hiding – even as a war between planets is waged in Rhee’s name. But soon, Rhee and Aly discover that the assassination attempt is just one part of a sinister plot. Bound together by an evil that only they can stop, the two fugitives must join forces to save the galaxy.CROWN PRINCESS RHIANNON TA’AN WANTS VENGEANCE.

A Diverse Book that Has Yet to Be Released

Title: #Prettyboy Must Die
Author: Kimberly Reid
Release Date: 2018
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Thriller
Pages: TBD

Why I Want to Read: Currently there’s no cover, and we don’t know much but I want to hype the shit out of this book. It’s about a black teenager who also happens to work for the CIA. He ends up ruining his cover upon accidentally becoming an internet sensation. From what we know so far, it sounds amazing. This is probably the book I’m looking forward to most in 2018. I love plots that involve situations were characters become internet famous. I can’t wait until we learn more. Keep this book on your radar.

Blurb:

A YA thriller featuring Jake Morrow, a young African-American CIA prodigy who accidentally becomes an Internet sensation, thereby blowing his cover.
